The meaning of Vivaswan

Vivaswan (sanskryt: विवस्वन्त्् vivasvant) means 'the Sun'. The word is derived from the root vas - 'to cover, to pervade'; with the prefix vi- ; therefore the word can be understood as 'the one who pervades everything in a particular way' (viśeṣeṇa vāste, ācchādayatīti). To Vivaswan were the first teachings of Yoga transmitted, as Shri Krishna said:

This perpetual Yoga I had taught to Vivaswan,
Vivaswan taught it to Manu and Manu instructed Ikshwaku.

Thus transmitted in succession
eminent sages got its lore.
After so long time, this Yoga
dissapeared, oh defeater of foes!

I taught to you today
the very same ancient Yoga
because you love me, because you are my dear companion -
It is the topmost secret.

(Bhagavadgītā, 4.1-3)
