Course in Indian Classical Music: Vocal Workshop and Concerts - Dr. Aditi Sharma Garg, June 6-16, 2025

In the period 5 to 16 June 2025, in the name of Vivaswan Foundation, I will have the honour of hosting the eminent vocalist and personality Dr. Aditi Sharma Garg. The Artist will visit Poland for the third time, and for the second time,  after 2019, at the invitation of the Foundation. Unique workshops and concerts of her are being organized. The participation in the workshop will be the unique opportunity to learn the secretes of voice and Indian music. She will be accompanied on the traditional Indian drum, the pakhawaj, by Piotr Malec, and the additional lessons will be conducted by myself. The entire event will be conducted in English, Hindi and Sanskrit and I will undertake to interpratat it.

The course will include:
- vocal training
- dhrupad singing
- introduction to khayal and bhajan singing
- explanation of nada yoga
- learning selected songs and Sanskrit / Vedic hymns
- practice of Indian rhythms (tabla and pakhawaj)
- theory and philosophy of music and aestetical experience
- explanation of the meanings of Sanskrit/Hindi songs.
- introduction to Sanskrit (phonetics, pronunciation)

Additionally:
- relaxation, breathing exercises (pranayama)
- introduction to Indian instruments: sitar, tanpura, tabla, pakhawaj

Participants will also receive materials for singing practice, including song lyrics. More details will be provided soon.

Workshop participants will be able to attend all of Aditi's concerts free of charge during her stay in Poland.

Weekend workshop (Friday to Sunday): EUR 200
One day entry: EUR 100

The fee does not include accommodation and meals, which will be available at the workshop venue for an additional charge.
Full board (healthy, tasty, vegetarian, three full meals cooked on site, respecting individual dietetic needs): EUR 35 /day.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Dr. Aditi Sharma Garg is a classical Indian vocalist, dhrupad singer and musicologist. Born into a family of musicians in the third generation, started her formal  music training at the tender age of four under the tutelage of her grandfather Pt. Krishna Datt Sharma and father, Nāda-yogī,  Pt. Shri Datt Sharma, a renowned dhrupad exponent and Sanskrit scholar. Hence, enlivening the third generation and carrying forward the lineage of the rich tradition of Dhrupad gāyaki. At home she gets a formidable base and an ambience inculcated with holistic learning of Indian Classical Music. The guidance constantly enlightens to maintain the balance of the aesthetical embellishments without daunting the purity of raga.

Aditi follows Nāradīya-śailī (style/school) of singing believed to be primarily derived out of Sāma Veda. The gāyaki is an amalgamation of subtle rendering of notes with spontaneous improvisational patterns. Her robust style of singing with mellifluous meandering of notes are the hallmark feature of her rendition. She has a strong command on khayāl gayaki and semi-classical music, where ṭhumrī, bhajans etc. are in a regular routine. Aditi has inherited the dynamism of dhruvapada and the subtleties of khayāl. 

Aditi is M.A. gold medalist in Indian Classical Music from University of Delhi and graduate in English Literature B.A. (hons.) from Hansraj College, University of Delhi. She has topped M.Phil examination in Music and has done her Ph.D titled “Compregensive Study of the Musical Nuances Pertaining to Dhrupad Gayaki"  from University of Delhi. She is a linguist, has learnt French language to the advanced level, has constantly worked on various Sanskrit texts and treatises.

Aditi is carving her own niche in the ambit of Indian Classical Music and getting her talent recognized by the great art curators and veterans. At the age of fourteen she had performed at the country’s highest legislature, the prestigious Central Hall, the Parlament of India.

She is becoming a regular feature in prestigious musical concerts and conferences in India and abroad. She has won gold medal and first position at national Hariballabh Sangeet Sammelan (Jalandhar), won first position in the dhrupad, khayāl and ṭhumī respective categories in the year 2011 at the prestigious U.P. Sangeet Natak Akademi (Lucknow) twice a winner of All India Sangam Kala Group Light Music competition in the year 2004 and 2006 respectively. She is empaneled jury member for various TV shows like Indian Idol, sa re ga ma pa etc. She is also an Advisory Panel Member for Central Board of Film Certification, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and has done recording for numerous projects and documentaries.

Aditi keenly participates and performed lecture- demonstrations in seminars and conferences organized by various organisations, educational institute, etc., acquainting masses about the role of music and its therapeutic effects in the realms of medicine.

Dr. Aditi has been invited to conduct music workshop by the prestigious organisations like SPIC MACAY, T-series, etc. internationally, she has performed at The Nehru Centre, The High Commission of India, London (UK), The Indian Embassy, Dublin (Ireland), International Music Festival Ethno Sweden in Stockholm, Sweden; Brave Festival, Wrocław, Poland and in Barcelona, Spain. she is spreading the fragrance of rich indian tradition by conducting workshops on Indian Classical Music and its ancillary forms to the international pupils.  
 
She is also running the gurukulam of Indian Classical Music, Sur Mandir in DELHI established in 1984 by her grandfather and Guru, spreading the rich fragrance of Indian classical music.

Piotr Malec - tabla player and multi-instrumentalist percussionist. He specialises in playing the Indian tabla, performing Indian classical music. He also plays the Spanish cajón and oriental percussion instruments such as the darbuka, daff and bendir. For many years, he has also been exploring the secrets of other Indian instruments such as the mridangam, khanjira, pakhawaj and dholak. Piotr hails from an artistic family and his fascination with Indian music began at an early age, along with an interest in Indian culture. He has participated in many music workshops and trained with renowned Indian and Polish teachers such as Jerzy Pomianowski on the tabla, and in India with Giridar Udupa on the mridangam, Prosenjit Poddar on tabla, Uday Rajkarpoora in Bangalore and with Sandesh Popatkar in Nagpur  (tabla).

He is a recipient of a three year scholarship for tabla studies sponsored by the ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in New Delhi (2022-2025).

He has given numerous concerts in Poland and abroad. He has performed with renowned artists from India, including Rishab Prasanna, Anup Mishra, Uday Rajkarpoor, Anandita Basu, Amit Chakraborty, and Polish artists Michał Czachowski, Maria Pomianowska and Artur Dutkiewicz. He is a member of the bands Indialucia, Natya Raga and Batik.
